
Petros Stangos
Personal Experience
Professor Petros Stangos advises on all aspects of European and International economic law, on European human rights law and Greek and European social and anti-discrimination law. He is a Docteur d’État in International law of the Dijon University (France) and from 1997 to August 2020 he served as a Full Professor of EU law and European human rights law (Jean Monnet Chair) at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki Law School.
He has been visiting professor at several European universities (Université de Paris 1-La Sorbonne, Institut d’Études Européennes of Brussels, Institute for Advanced Studies of Nantes, Luxembourg, Gent, Strasbourg, Aix-Marseille) and at the National School of Judges in both fields of his scientific competence. He has previously managed, and actively participates in many European and Greek research projects, primarily in the field of human rights protection and anti-discrimination.
Petros Stangos is a former Member of the Special High Court of Greece (2006-2007) and of Greece’s National Committee of Human Rights (2006-2012).
He is the author of twelve main books, the editor of five others and the author of more than one hundred articles written in Greek, French and English. The fields covered by his works are EU economic law, Greek and European human rights law and anti-discrimination law, European social law, International economic law and Public international law. Selected works have also been translated into Spanish, Turkish and Polish.
His significant experience in European human rights law has led him to act as legal adviser in the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Justice, as well as in EU institutions, such as the Fundamental Rights Agency in Vienna, and Council of Europe institutions, such as the European Committee against Racism and Intolerance in Strasbourg.
From January 2009 to December 2020 he was a member of the European Committee of Social Rights at the Council of Europe, having acted as vice-chairman from 2013 to 2016.
